What is Orthopaedics?

Orthopaedics is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and diseases of your body’s musculoskeletal system. This complex system includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.

Once devoted to the care of children with spine and limb deformities, the term ‘orthopaedics’ is derived from the Greek ortho (straight) and pais (child).

Today, orthopaedics cares for patients of all ages, from newborns with clubfeet to athletes requiring arthroscopic surgery to older people with arthritis. And of course, anyone can break a bone.

Orthopaedic Conditions

Orthopaedics is the medical specialty that focuses on injuries and diseases of your body's musculoskeletal system.

This complex system includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. In a nutshell, it is the system that allows you to move, work, and be active.

Coastal Orthopaedics & Sports Injuries recommends that information about medical/surgical conditions only be obtained from the surgeon looking after you and from recognised professional organisations such as the ones linked below:
